An Ode to Farmers:
As we celebrate our 11th anniversary today - we would like to take this opportunity to unveil a wonderful gift received from 4 wonderful grade 12 students from Abbey Park High School in Oakville: Momina Hassan, Ariel Zhang , Aizah Malik, Alishba Ali.
They created this piece to highlight the amazing and vital work of the farmers who grow the food we consume.
We’re are so grateful for this thoughtful gift.
We hope you take some time to enjoy their creation that is now displayed in our el salon.
Below is their artist statement:
An Ode to Farmers depicts the start of a coffee bean's life. Before it's enjoyed as coffee in North America, Colombian farmers painstakingly nurture the coffee beans from planting to harvest.
This acrylic on canvas piece uses a mixture of techniques to depict a typical Colombian coffee farm with a mountainous backdrop, luscious rolling green hills, and a traditional red and white farmhouse.
Most importantly, of course, is the farmer herself. Wearing a straw-woven hat and staring off onto her farmland, the farmer remains faceless to remind viewers that this tale of selfless labour is not unique to one face, rather it is shared by countless farmers in Colombia and beyond.
As you view the piece, we ask that you take a moment out of your day and reflect on all the ways farmers have contributed to your life. Appreciating traditionally urban professions such as doctors and lawyers is commonplace, yet most people are so physically removed from the efforts of farmers that their stories remain untold.
To counteract this 'out of sight, out of mind' phenomenon, An Ode to Farmers acts as a visual reminder to honor the labour of the farmers who feed us.
